So for the last 18 years I have spent the latter part of August preparing the barns and fields for Bush, a tiring but ultimately hugely rewarding task shared with an amazing group of friends. (For those of you suffering from withdrawal symptoms I can arrange masks and hand sanitizer and you can do socially distant cleaning of the barn!) This year is so different, the world has changed in ways few of us could have imagined let alone anticipated.
I have missed the markers of routine in life, it’s Sunday so get ready to go to church has become sit in front of the computer, celebrating life events with friends throws up all kinds of challenges. For me zoom doesn’t quite cut it.
I find myself wondering what Bush 2020 would have been like. Before anyone had heard of Covid 19 we discussed a theme with Kevin Smallacombe, who was to be our speaker, and decided to centre the sessions on ‘Living in the Light’ particularly looking at John’s epistles. Events and news stories from around the world leads me to conclude that in many ways our society has entered a darker place, where anxious thoughts are all too common and foundations once considered secure, even sacred, are no longer quite so solid.
Pondering this a few days ago I was reminded of words about Jesus at the start of John’s gospel;
In Him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
The passage goes on to reference the ministry of John the Baptist who was a witness to the light. I’m not sure what that will look like for us but my feeling is that knowledge of the truth will become increasingly important, Jesus said that knowing the truth would set us free.
I’m going to miss spending the weekend with you, but hope and pray that wherever you are you are enriched by memories of past Bushes and thereby encouraged to face the future, knowing that the Holy Spirit who was frequently tangibly present in the barns is also resident within each of us.
4Front Theatre were due to be part of Bush this year. Below is the link to the Virtual Holiday Club that they recorded earlier in the summer. Of course you won’t be able to join in with the fun of it being live or send in crafts, yet the week’s content is all still there to be made use of on the YouTube channel:
